Virgin Australia have announced that they hope to allow small dogs and cats to fly in the main cabin onboard domestic flights. This will be a first for Australia but already happens elsewhere in the world.

In the USA for example, airlines such as Southwest, Alaska, United, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Spirit, and Frontier are amongst those that allow pets as carry-ons. In Europe, where small dogs are a very popular choice of pet, it is common to take your pooch everywhere. Commonly seen in cafes, restaurants, trains and cities.
Most European airlines will allow small dogs onboard, generally with a weight limit of 8kg. Be warned that some of the bidget carriers such as popular RyanAir do not allow them at all.
Universally the rule is one pet per carrier, which is stowed under the seat to ensure safety for the pet, and your fellow passengers. In the USA, the USDA states that the pet must be at least eight ( weeks old and fully weaned before flying. At an average of USD$125 per flight, some being less than $100, it will be interesting to see the pricing once introduced here locally.

There are a number of city escapes that allow small dogs, such as the Lancemore in Sydney, the new W Hotel at Darling Harbour and the Four Seasons down towards The Rocks. In Melbourne, small sized fur babies are spoilt for choice with the likes of the Langham and the Dorsett amongst the many fur family options for a luxury city escape.
